I vividly remember approaching my wife, asking her to invest in a brand-new fund from Eastspring Investments. I was convinced that China was the future—the world’s second-largest economy, soon to surpass the USA as the undisputed global economic champion.

She believed me because my proposal was too good to ignore.

What happened since then was a nosedive in the Chinese market. It felt like the economy was on a long term diarrhea. Forgive me for the lack of better words. The fund’s price dropped from RM0.50 to RM0.2664—a staggering 47% loss!

If you’re not bothered by this, I salute you. You must have the heart of iron. To give you some context:

• If you invested RM5,000, it has now fallen to RM2,650.

• If you invested RM30,000, you’re left with just RM15,900.

She would have slapped me so hard that I wouldn’t have remembered my own name for losing HALF of her hard-earned money. Luckily, that didn’t happen.

While other investors suffered a 47% loss, her portfolio only showed an unrealized loss of 2%. How is that possible?

What she did right was, instead of making a lump sum investment, she contributed regularly. By investing monthly or weekly, she bought units at different prices. At one point, she bought at RM0.50 per unit, and when the price dropped to RM0.26, she continued buying. This helps her to average the cost!

I’ve shared this strategy with my other investors why Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA), or what I call the RICh method(Regular Investment for Compounding Wealth), is hands-down the smartest way to invest.

DCA was invented by some nerd back in the 1920s and 1930s in the U.S during the rise of mutual funds, this approach was designed to make stock market investing accessible to everyday people. It was later championed by Benjamin Graham in his 1949 classic, The Intelligent Investor, where he outlined a strategy of investing fixed amounts regularly to sidestep the pitfalls of trying to time the market. Here’s why DCA remains a game-changer for building wealth.

   Over 50 years, the S&P 500 grew from $1 to $191.67, delivering a total return of 19,067% with an average of 11.5% per year. Patience and a long-term perspective can turn small investments into significant gains.

7. When we invest in Unit Trust / Mutual fund, our goal is to find good funds that can beat the market (index) long term

8. Two keys here. Time in the market is your best friend. → Refer to point no:5

   • This means it’s better to stay invested for the long term rather than trying to buy and sell quickly to catch the perfect time.

9. Markets have cycles—they go up and down. → Refer to point no:6

   • Understanding that price rises and falls are normal helps you stay patient and avoid panic.

10. The problem is human emotion

    • Imagine you buy a stock at $10, and you’re lucky because you buat the the lowest & the price goes up to $20. You feel excited when it even reaches $35.

    • But then the price starts to drop. It falls to $18, and you begin to feel nervous. You wonder if you should sell or hold on.

    • Then the price keeps falling to $11. You panic and sell because you’re afraid it might go even lower.

    • A smart investor, however, buys at $10 and ignores all the ups and downs. They stay calm, and now the price is $40.

11. Here is the problem, no body know where is the bottom of the market & not everyone have huge amount of capital to invest.

12. One common mistake novice investors make is selling a good business just because its stock price drops

    • For example, imagine Apple’s stock is $200 per share but falls to $170 after President Trump imposes tariffs on many countries.

    • Many new investors panic and sell, fearing the price will fall even more.

    • But Apple’s fundamentals remain strong: huge cash reserves, high profit margins, little to no debt, strong brand, and solid free cash flow.

    • Smart investors see this as a chance to buy more, since they are getting a great company at a cheaper price.

13. Since nobody can perfectly time the market , buy at bottom , sell at top what will be our best option to invest in the stock market / unit trust?

14. The answer is Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA). → An automatic monthly / weeklly Rregular Investment.

    • Because you dont need to time the market.

    • So this method eliminates emotion, because you keep buying regardless of market go up or down.

    • And you can sleep peacefully. No stress at looking at the market everyday

15. This is the proof that why DCA works

Last night, the US stock market surged significantly, recovering the losses from Panic Monday two weeks ago.

Come back with a vengeance!

Those who didn’t panic and bought during that week are indeed fortunate.

That’s the power of the Nasdaq 100.

But did you know, that in 1986, 1 oz of gold was valued at $368?

After 38 years, its price is $2,542. - A sevenfold increase! Amazing!!

This means if you bought 1 oz of gold at $1,000, today it would be worth $7,000.

However, if you diversified and bought the Nasdaq 100 index,

in 1986, the Nasdaq 100 was at 367 points, almost the same as the price of gold.

But yesterday, the Nasdaq 100 index was at 19,766 points.

A 54-fold increase!!

If you bought a financial instrument tracking the Nasdaq 100 for $1,000 in 1986, your investment might now be worth $54,000!

Would you prefer $7,000 or $54,000?

That’s why you need to learn to diversify your investments.

KLCI Performance (As of Midday, August 5, 2024):

• The KLCI (FTSE Malaysia KLCI) declined by 44.38 points to 1566.67, representing a 2.75% drop due to negative news globally.

• Technically it’s not a crash yet. So steady. Don’t get too nervous.

• As mentioned in my previous newsletter “Global Market Report 3 - Aug 2024 edition” the global market is in the corrective structure. Either wave 2 (China) or wave 4 (US and other countries)

  

• Therefore the sell-off that happened in the last few trading days is part of a natural cycle of the market.

So what causes a sudden sell-off?

US Economic Concerns:

• Speculation arose due to concerns about a potential US economic slowdown (a “hard landing”) after Friday’s jobs report.

• Market participants speculated that the US Federal Reserve might consider a 50 basis points (bps) cut in the Federal Funds Rate (FFR) instead of the usual 25 bps.

• That how the sell-off started in the US

Next, we look at Japan.

Bank of Japan’s Interest Rate Hike:

• The Bank of Japan unexpectedly raised interest rates to the highest level in 15 years.

• As a result, the Japanese Yen strengthened against the US Dollar (USD).

• I expect the USD will flip in the future as the $USDJPY pair is also in the wave 4 correction.

  

• Geopolitical Tensions:

  • Iran vowed revenge for the alleged assassination of a Hamas political leader in Tehran.

  • This heightened tensions in the Middle East, with fears that Israel’s conflict with Hamas and allies could escalate into a full-fledged war.

• Investor Behavior:

  • In times of uncertainty, investors often become fearful and withdraw their funds to secure profits. However, what many fail to realize is that such moments can present the best investment opportunities.

  • A prime example is the 2020 COVID crisis, during which Malaysia’s small-cap market experienced a significant crash, plummeting by 45%

  

  • Many people fear and withdraw their investment. But see what happens after this?

Dear Breakout Investor/Trader,

Are you feeling frustrated? You see gold breaking out from a rectangle pattern and immediately call your broker to buy 10 gold contracts.

What happens next is the price makes a false breakout and you probably exit to cut your losses small.

Timing the market is incredibly challenging, if not nearly impossible, especially for active traders.

Why China + India Strategy?

Global GDP is expected to grow at 3% in 2024 & 2025. China & India are expected to grow by 5% & 6.8% this year and by far the highest GDP growth among nations.

Why china? China has the largest middle class with the fastest-rising household disposable income.

Why India? India has the world largest youth population setting the foundation for high GDP growth.

By 2030, Asia Could represent 2/3 of global middle class population

Housing remain the largest drag for china economy.

China property investment stayed weak at -10%. Property sales decline by -18%

However other key economic indicators shows a steady upward trajectory with accelerated export.

In terms of market valuation, India is expensive. While china dirt cheap.

Although India valuation is not cheap.

But corporate earning is strong.

Corporate Earning growth remain strong for year 2024 and 2025

India has a strong foreign and domestic flow

China and India equity market have many stocks to choose from.

China & India are two of the most diversified market in Asia. Unlike Taiwan, 70% of the sector are into IT, while Malaysia and Indonesia majority of the sector are into Financial and banking.

If you adopt an investment approach that combines 50% China and 50% India, you would have outperformed the Asia ex Japan, Developed Market, and Emerging Market indices since 2005.

Example:

I work, but my wife does not. We have two children.

Here are my financial obligations:

• Monthly expenses for the family: RM5,000 (food, bills, etc.)

• Remaining car loan: RM70,000

• Remaining credit card debt: RM7,000

• Planned education fund for each child: RM100,000

If I am no longer able to work due to permanent disability or death:

1. I want to settle the above debts using the Life insurance payout → Total: RM77,000

2. Then, I want to ensure an education fund of RM200,000 for both children.

3. Finally, I want to ensure RM5,000 per month for family expenses for the next 10 years. Calculation: RM5,000 x 12 months x 10 years = RM600,000

The total life insurance I need is RM77,000 + RM200,000 + RM600,000 = RM877,000

That’s a nice number! 🤣

To get RM877,000, the best way is to get term life insurance because it is affordable and you can use the rest of your money to find a better yield return.

The concept of insurance, or Hibah for Muslims, is straightforward. It’s not about making money while alive, but about providing peace of mind for your family. If one day you are no longer with them, they will be relieved knowing you haven’t left behind debts or burdens
